First Time Visitor?

greeting at the door

We are so glad you are thinking about joining us for the first time! We welcome you and want to you feel as comfortable as possible, whether you've been to church many times or never.

Service Times and Location:

Sundays 9:45 am

Nursery care begins at 9:30

1 Church St. Upton, MA (directions)

Parking is found in our Church Street lot and along adjacent streets.

Sunday worship begins at 9:45, but people start arriving anytime before (and, let's be honest, anytime after!). Our service lasts about an hour, give or take 5-10 minutes. Our worship space is called "the Sanctuary" and is accessed through the main, front steps that face North Main Street, or a side door on Church Street. After the service there is a time for greeting and visiting ("Coffee Hour") in our largest meeting room, "the Vestry," on the street level, under the Sanctuary.

As of right now, our Sanctuary is accessible by stairs and a chair lift. We are currently in the planning stages of an accessibility campaign to install an elevator to our sanctuary.

      About our Worship Service:
people in pew

  • When you arrive, you will most likely be welcomed by a greeter at the front door, and by an usher once in the Sanctuary. The ushers will hand you a worship program, "the Order of Worship," which will tell you everything you need to know (words to say, hymns to sing, pages of the Bible readings, when to stand up) to fully participate in worship.  We like to say we enjoy a "balanced" style of worship, incorporating some beloved traditional hymns - like Amazing Grace or Holy, Holy, Holy - and contemporary and global music -  like Lord, I Lift Your Name on High or Uyai Mose ("Come, All You People"). Our worship is a mix of formal and informal: our choir and pastor wear robes, but everyone else wears whatever they want!
  • Attendance pads are passed through the pews during the first hymn.  The information provided by you is used to reach out to you and to acknowledge your visit. Please give us enough information so that we may acknowledge your visit and extend our welcome to you.
  • We often have a time when we invite the kids in attendance to come forward and gather in front of the altar for what we call "Worshipping with our Children." An adult will share a Children's Sermon: a story or a conversation about a topic relevant to the day's themes. They then close with a prayer and invite the kids to proceed to their Sunday School classes.
  • After the Sunday School dismissal, worshippers hear a sermon prepared by our pastor or a guest preacher, usually based on a Bible passage suggested by a calendar of weekly Bible readings, called "the lectionary."
  • We often share prayer concerns and celebrations during a part of the service we call "Joys and Concerns." Participants can name places, people or situations they would like to have prayed for - in thanksgiving or concern - and the worship leader will lift them up in a spoken prayer we call the "Pastoral Prayer."
  • We collect an offering each Sunday, inviting members and regular worshippers to contribute financially to our ministries which serve the larger community as well as our own members. You do not have to contribute to the offering. You are our guest!
  • On the first Sunday of the month we celebrate Holy Communion, the commemoration of Jesus' Last Supper with his disciples. Everyone is welcome to share Communion. We serve grape juice and gluten-free bread.

Here are some other things you might want to know:

  • Infant/Toddler Care: We have a trained, paid nursery care provider who is on duty from 9:30 to 11:00 am each Sunday. The Nursery is downstairs, across the large fellowship hall (“the Vestry”) and up the small staircase.
  • Sunday School (grades Preschool through 5th Grade): Takes place during the worship service. Generally this age group attends worship with their families until the “Dismissal Hymn.” Please feel free to walk your child to their class and return to worship anytime. A list and map of age group classrooms is out in the entryway, or ask an usher to help you.
  • Youth: We have two youth groups, Junior and Senior Youth Group
    • Junior Youth Group (grades 6-8): “JYG” meets (just about) every other Sunday starting at 6:00 pm.
    • Senior Youth Group (grades 9-12): “SYG” meets most Sundays, 6:00-8:00 pm here at the church in the Youth Area. All youth are welcome to join anytime!
